Founded in 1865 by 15 families is the oldest town in Dimmit County- Carrizo Springs. This name came from the local springs, which was named by the Spanish for the cane grass that grew around that area. Carrizo Springs was the designated county seat. In 1880, early settler Levi English donated lands to the community. The local economy relied on sheep and cattle ranching. Artesian water was discovered to be cheap source of irrigation in 1900. Carrizo Springs had the only newspaper and only radio station in the county in 1984. There is a mystery graveside in Carrizo Springs which later was found to be the Burleson Cemetery.
