Carthage is Panola County’s second county seat. It is found 42 miles west of Louisiana, near the center of Panola County. It was founded in 1847. After the Civil War, the local economy thrived with agriculture. In 1888, a railroad arrived at Carthage, along with telegraph and telephone lines. Carthage has one of the largest gas field in the US. The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and the Tex Ritter Museum are both located in Carthage. The two-story Old Panola County Jail is a community museum and historic center. It was completed in 1891.
