Situated in Llano County, Castell is the oldest surviving settlement in that area. It began on the north bank of Llano River in 1847 but is now on the south bank. This is because the community centered the post office that was established in the south bank in 1872. Castell was first settled by German immigrants. The town was named for Count Carl Frederick Castell-Castell, business manager of Adelsverein. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1964. Education for students in Castell began orally in 1852 until 1884 when a land was deeded for the school’s use.
