According to legend, Catarina, Texas was named after a Mexican woman killed by Indians on the site. The town was established after Asher Richardson, who decided to build a railway link. By 1915 the little town had become famous in the area for the Taft House, an expensive mansion left by Charles Taft. The Great Depression had hurt the town. In 1931, the population dropped from 2,500 residents to 592. In 2000, the population dropped to 135. The major economy in Catarina was ranching. Catarina is the subject of the Texas Country song "Cowboy From Catarina" by Max Stalling.
