The original settlement began around a path bordered with a ‘lane’ of cedars. Hence the name, Cedar Lane. It is found in east central of Matagorda County. Prior to this, it was originally known as Sugar Land and then Bowieville because of the Bowie Plantation. The Texas and New Orleans Railroad made a stop in Cedar Lane. In 1912, the first post office was constructed. By 1949 Cedar Lane school had been consolidated with the Van Vleck Independent School District. In 1972 the settlement had a church, the Kennedy school, and several scattered dwellings. In 2000, the estimated population was 55 with three businesses operating.
