Centerville was chosen for the geographic location in the Leon County. It is the county seat for Leon County, replacing Leona and Buffalo. The first courthouse was a log cabin built in 1850. The Leon Pioneer was published between 1852 and 1856. Schools were first taught in the back of a store in 1851. The community was dealt a severe blow when it was bypassed by the International-Great Northern Railroad in 1872. On the west side of the courthouse lies the Leon County veteran’s memorial. In 1914, the original spelling of the town was changed from Centreville to Centerville.
