Originally named Rivers, the town was renamed as Channing. Both names were in honor to George Channing Rivers, paymaster of the railroad. The town was developed directly from XIT Ranch enterprise. Channing gained residents when the town of Tascosa was abandoned in 1891. Channing fought with Hartley for the county seat and in 1903 Channing was elected as county seat. The main devastation of the local economy was when XIT Ranch liquefied in 1911. Postwar mobility and the improved highways have drained Channing’s population down to the current 363. Channing might be the least populated city in Texas to maintain an independent K-12 school.
