Named after the family that purchased 34,000 acres of the King Ranch in 1919, Chapman Ranch an unincorporated community in Nueces County. A school in town was named Santa Cruz, the original name of the King Ranch water well at the site. the Ranch was recognized as the world’s largest mechanized farm with 20,000 acres in cultivation. Experiments were conducted to improve cotton production. The heirs of the Chapman family continue to run the ranch and cotton is still the main crop. Chapman Ranch Wind Farm is responsible for generating electricity for the state’s power grid starting 2017.
