Found inside Stephen F. Austin’s original colony, Chappell Hill is the oldest Anglo-settled land in the state. The founder of this town is credited to the wife of a local trader Jacob Haller. The town is named after her grandfather, Robert Wooding Chappell. In 1847 the town became a commercial center for local cotton plantations. During the Civil War, Chappell Hill organized the 21st Texas Lancers and had both a Confederate hospital and Quartermaster's Depot in the town. In 1867 there was an outbreak of Yellow Fever, causing the economy to collapse. Polish immigrants arrived in the 1870s. The area is renowned for its blooming bluebonnet fields and scenic views.
