Being part of a five-league grant to Gavino Aranjo, Chester is found in the extreme northwest of Tyler County. The town was named for Chester A. Arthur, who was at the time a senator from New York. Chester was created when the railway bypassed the area, which made Peach Tree Village a ghost town. The earlier community centered at Peachtree moved to the site. The town became incorporated in 1968. Males had a median household income of $30,536 while females had $14,750. Chester is surrounded by prime pine forests and had seen sawmill activities for many years.
