Known as the ‘Limestone Capital of Texas’, Chico has numerous rock quarries. It is named after a Western town- Chico, California. The town became an important cotton shipping point when the railroad arrived. Oil was uncovered in the early 1940s and the economy diversified from being totally agricultural. Each fall, the town celebrates Chico Fest which serves as a fundraiser for community groups. The city also serves as the northern gateway to Lake Bridgeport. According to the 2018 census, the estimated population was 1,152. This gives a population density of 670 per square miles. Chico is also home to the 2019 Midget Football Champions.
