Chicota was established in 1879. It is in the north of Lamar County, located near the Red River. It is an unincorporated community. The first store was called Center Springs, started by Captain Robert Draper. He chose the name when he heard the word Checotah in reference to a place in Indian Territory. By the time the Great Depression was underway, Chicota was down to a few businesses and the church and cemetery. The North Lamar Independent School District serves area students. The population remained the same from 1990 to 2000, an estimated 125 residents.
