Childress, the county seat of Childress County, is found in the central part of the county. The name was taken from George C. Childress, author of Texas Declaration of Independence. The town developed from two separate townsites, Childress City and Henry. The county and city were incorporated more than four decades after Childress's death. Henry was then changed to Childress after its election as county seat. The railroad continued as the industrial mainstay of Childress into the 1940s. Childress was known as the ‘Gateway to Panhandle’ and an important agribusiness center. The Old Settlers’ Reunion is held annually in July.
