First known as China Grove, China is a city in Jefferson County. This is due to a grove of Chinaberry trees in that site. China was a center for rice production and oil fields. Oil was discovered in 1939 and natural gas was found after 1960. During World War II, German prisoners helped maintain rice fields while local farmers served in the military. China Elementary hosted Chinaberry Festivals to celebrate the history of the city until 2005 when Hurricane Rite occurred. According to the 2010 census, the total population was estimated to be 1,160 people.
