Chireno was named after Jose Antonio Chireno, one of the original Spanish settlers. Spanish pioneers first received grants in 1790 from the government. It is found southwest of Nacogdoches County. The first post office was a large two-story building built by Samuel Flournoy. The town provided boots for the troops during the Civil War. Farming and livestock remained important in the local economy. In 1912 the railroad was built, increasing the population to 415 in 1990. However, currently there are 386 residents in the area. Males had a median income of $25,625 while it is $20,227 for females.
