Clarendon, Texas was initially set up to be a town where cowboys can ‘dry out’. Clarendon is located in Donley County. The moto during that time was ‘Christianity, Education, Temperance, Civilization- Westward’. By early 1880s, Clarendon was one of the three towns in Panhandle. It has been elected the county seat since 1882. Found in the Baptist church was once the largest pipe organ in Northern Texas. The area is the only cowboy cemetery that is still in operation. The first and last legal hanging was in Clarendon when an innocent man was hung for a crime he did not commit.
