Called ‘a jewel in the rough’ by Texas Historical Commission, Clifton is located in the southern Bosque County. Founded in the winter of 1852-53, the town was called Cliff Town after the limestone cliffs around the area. Over the years the name was simplified into Clifton. The site was originally on the banks of Clear Branch but was shifted nearer the railway in 1880. The oldest church in continuous service in the county is the First Presbyterian Church of Clifton which was organized in 1861. In 1890 Clifton was elected as the county seat. Clifton is currently listed as part of the Dallas-Fort Worth DMA.
