Named after a railroad dispatcher John B Comstock, Comstock came into being about 1883. The original town site was just east of present Comstock and was called Sotol City. The hilly terrain makes an interesting residential section. The liveliest building in town is the U.S. Border Patrol Station. In the late 1890s, Comstock became known as a lawless place when a minor outlaw by the name of Bud Newman was living in the area. Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site has cave drawings and other evidence of settlement dating from the early Archaic period, around 7000 BC.
