Copperas Cove is a city in central Texas. The settlement began in the 1870s where the name Cove was submitted for a post office but was rejected due to prior claim. Inspired by the copper-tasting water of a nearby spring, the word Copperas was added to the resubmitted application. The Copperas Cove post office opened in 1879. Three years after, the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway arrived and the townspeople moved two miles northeast to take advantage of the provided railroad. By 1884, the town had a hotel, and shortly after that, a district was formed. In 1900, The city’s cattle production was replaced by farming as the area’s major economic engine. Although the town suffered from the Great Depression hit, WWII became a lifesaver for the town when the government established Camp Hood. Camp Hood became Fort Wood in 1950 and the post has become a permanent facility. And even though the city was founded as a small ranching and farming community, it is the largest city in Coryell County as of today.
