Cross Plains is a town in Callahan County and a part of the Abilene, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. It had been once named “Turkey Creek,” after the stream that still crosses Treadaway Park. In 1880, Cross Plains had a store, a cotton gin, a wagonmaker, and a gristmill. The town was incorporated in 1910 and after two years, the Texas Central Railroad came through, leading the town to become a trading center for cotton and other crops. The town discovered oil in 1925 and as a result, the residents remained relatively stable towards the 1980s. By that time, the town had a new high school and post office, two motels, four restaurants, and eight churches.
