Cunningham is an unincorporated community in Lamar County. It was named after Sam Cunningham, a landowner who pursued the community settlement. In 1912, a post office was opened and three years later, the town had two churches, three general stores, a printer, a sawmill, a physician, and a newspaper. When the Great Depression hit the town, the population dropped tremendously and the businesses declined. Despite that, Cunningham opened an additional church in the 1980s, along with its school, a few businesses, and a population of 110, which remained at that number in 2000.
