Cushing is a city in Nacogdoches County. It was founded in 1902 when the Texas and New Orleans Railroad declared that it would lay track. Cushing was named after Edward Benjamin Cushing who was the head foreman of the railroad. In 1902, a post office was awarded and the town was laid out a year later. The railroad stimulated the development of the lumbering industry and Cushing instantly became a shipping center for the large number of sawmills in the area. In 1905, the town was incorporated; and by 1914, Cushing had a bank, a hotel, a weekly newspaper, and 28 businesses. When the Great Depression and the deforestation of the surrounding area struck Cushing, the town began to decline. Although most of the residents remained steady after that, many of the businesses shut down. In 1965, the city had thirty-seven rated businesses but it went down to seven by the early 1990s.
