Dalhart is a city on the border of Dallam and Harley Counties. It is also the county seat of Dallam County. It was originally known as Twist, Texas, or Twist Junction. The city also attempted to name the town as Denrock, which came from the combination of the two railroads that crossed the town; however, the selection was rejected by the postal authorities, and a new choice came up. Hence, Dalhart was founded in 1901, where it was finally named after the portmanteau of its location: Dallam and Harley. Dalhart was incorporated as a town in 1902, replacing Texline as Dallam county seat after a year. Another year came, and Dalhart was incorporated as a city. Afterwhich, the town instantly grew as a shipping center for the XIT Ranch and other area ranches. In 1990, the city remained an agribusiness center, in addition to cattle feedlots, a bottling plant, and feed and meat processing plants. Since 1936, Dalhart has been the home of the XIT Ranch Reunion and Rodeo, along with its other community event – the annual Railroad Week.
