Dawn is an unincorporated community in Deaf Smith County. It was founded in 1887 by Jim Moore, a local rancher who built a dugout about six miles southwest of the present Dawn. J.H. Parrish then bought the dugout in 1889 and opened up a general store for the area ranchers. Although there were two stories behind the origin of Dawn’s name, its etymology remains disputed. In 1891, the community opened its first school and two years later, Parrish sold his land holdings and migrated to Oklahoma. In 1898, the Pecos Valley and Northeastern Railway came to Dawn and built a depot. Consequently, immigrant farmers moved into the town and the ranches started shipping cattle, which resulted in Dawn’s growth. By 1917, the town had a lumber company, a church, and a hotel. The town’s prosperity continued as irrigation wells made wheat the centerpiece of its economy.
