Dawson is a town in Navarro County. It was founded in 1847 by Britton Dawson, a cattle rancher and a veteran of San Jacinto, who arrived in the area in search of grass and water for his animals; hence, where the town was named after. Dawson lived in the town until his death in 1903. The town began to grow when the St. Louis Southwestern Railway built a line in 1881. Consequently, Dawson became a supply and shipping center for area farmers. The post office opened a year later, and the community started gathering businesses for growth and stability. During the 1920s, Dawson’s most prosperous years, the town had two banks, four cotton gins, and a cottonseed oil plant.
