Decatur is a city in and the county seat of Wise County. It was originally known as Taylorsville in honor of Gen. Zachary Taylor, a Mexican War hero. In 1857, a post office and the first school was inaugurated. A year later, the town’s name was changed in honor of Stephen Decatur, a Revolutionary War naval hero. During the Civil War, five members of the Unionist Peace party went on trial and were executed in Decatur. In 1882, the Forth Worth and Denver Railway arrived and the population tripled towards 1890. A century after, Decatur became a center for petroleum production, clothing and glass manufacturing, and marketing and processing for Wide County agribusiness. The city continued to grow in the early 20th century.
