Dell City is a city in Hudspeth County. It was founded in 1947 when men came looking for oil and discovered underground water. The discovery attracted developers from Austin and Midland, and soon promoted the town, which started with water irrigation. A post office was then established. According to one source, Dell City was named after its literary meaning: “a small, secluded, usually forested valley.” Although the population doubled from the early 1950s to the early 1960s, it had dropped tremendously by the end of that decade. In the mid-1980s, the city had four churches and a municipal airport. The population rose again towards the 1990s, along with thirty businesses. Onions, tomatoes, and long-staple cotton have been Dell City’s primary cash crops. Today, in addition to those crops, the city also grows chili peppers, and one vineyard from the area also sends out sweet grapes to Lubbock.
