Desdemona was one of the earliest communities in Brazos River. The settlement started around 1857, when the settlers built a small fort to protect themselves from an Indian attack. In 1875, the Funderburg brothers bought the land and the town started to develop. A couple of years later, Desdemona had a post office. And even though Desdemona was officially named as Desdemona, in honor of the daughter of the town justice of the peace, it was known as Hogtown for many years due to its location on Hog Creek. Some records have shown the town as Desdemonia or Desdimonia. Anyhow, the town’s economic mainstays were trade and agriculture, predominantly peanut farming. The oil discovery in 1918 had placed the town in an oil boom and the population reached 16,000 at one time. A year later, the Desdemona field became the second largest in the oil belt, and the Hog Creel Oil Company’s shareholders sold their $100 shares for $10,250 each.
