DeSoto is a city in Dallas County. It was first established in 1847, making it one of the oldest communities in North Texas. The post office was inaugurated in 1881, and the settlement was named after Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart, a famous physician who had dedicated a considerable amount of service to the community. The city was incorporated in 1949 and by 1960, DeSoto had twenty businesses and a population of 1,969. Dallas expanded southward, allowing the city to continue its growth. DeSoto then became a city of commuters. The growth gave improvements to the city’s municipal infrastructure that included road and park construction and a new water and sewage system. The town’s industrial, commercial, and residential construction increased as well. In the year 2000, DeSoto was reported with a population of 37,646, along with 1,203 businesses.
