Devine is a city in Medina County and a part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was established in 1881 when a railroad was built in the area. Hence, the town was named after a railroad lawyer, who was also a judge in San Antonio, Thomas Jefferson Devine. In 1904, the town was incorporated and went under the aldermanic form of government. In 1915, Devine became irrigated from the waters of Medina Lake. Cotton, the town’s major crop, was then replaced by vegetables, corn, and small grains. To date, Devine is still noted for its production of white corn. In addition, it has become the site of the largest Spanish peanut shipping center in South Texas.
