Dickens is a city in and the county seat of Dickens County. It was organized in 1891 and was named after the county itself. The area served as a supply joint for dugout line camps that are used by cowboys. In 1892, a post office was located and the settlement became officially known as Dickens. During the early 1900s, the city maintained to thrive and the businesses remained to be relatively stable during the 1930s and 1940s. In the 1950s though, the town lost thirteen businesses as well as its school. Despite that, the population increased in 1980. Dickens remained to be a marketing center for its surrounding ranches. The Dickens County Museum can be found in the county courthouse and a nearby region also offers a scenic view of colorful canyons, buttes, and creeks for its travelers.
