Dimmitt is a city in and the county seat of Casto County. It was founded in 1890 when the Bedford Town and Land Company bought a part of land near the center of the county and platted a townsite. H.G. Bedford was in charge of selling the lots at the new site and his promoters named the townsite after their co-worker and Bedford’s brother-in-law, Rev. W.C. Dimmitt. In 1891, Dimmitt was elected as the county seat and it remained to be as one despite the town’s relatively slow growth and lack of railroad. In 1928, a rail line was extended through town and soon after, Dimmitt was incorporated. By 1940, the city was booming as the county’s main trading point and Dimmitt High School acquired a reputation for its basketball team, amassing seven state championships between 1952 and 1992. Dimmitt had 233 businesses by the year 2000, and it has been depending upon the county’s variety of agricultural products and feedlots such as lettuce, onions, potatoes, carrots, cattle, and sheep.
