Donie is an unincorporated community in Freestone County. It was first settled in the 1880s but it wasn’t until 1898 that its residents applied for a post office. The submission was under the name of Douie, and was misread as Donie in Washington. In 1902, the Donie Chair Company was established, and it has been in existence since. The company was famous for its colonial-style chairs, which were shipped throughout the Southwest. Half a decade after, a railway was built two miles east of town, and the townsmen all migrated into the area. By 1914, the town had seven businesses, a blacksmith shop, and a population of 600.
