Donna is a city in Hidalgo County. It is situated in a territory that was awarded to Lino Cabazos as a part of a Mexican land grant in 1834. Thomas Jefferson Hooks, one of the early settlers, helped the formation of an agricultural company, which advertised the area’s favorable climate and resources. The city was named after his daughter, Donna Hooks Fletcher, who then established a ranch. Fletcher filled the ranch with Jersey cattle and ran a successful butter business. A railway was built in 1904; hence, when the town was founded. Three years later, the town was granted a depot and was named Donna, after Donna Fletcher. A year later, the post office was inaugurated, and a 500-ton-capacity sugar mill was built. Donna was incorporated in 1911, yet it was divided into Donna and East Donna the following year. In the early 20th century, Donna became one of the leading cities of the Rio Grande Valley.
