Doss is an unincorporated community in Gillespie County. It was named after the Doss Brothers who found the settlement in 1849. The brothers soon built a gristmill, a distillery, a dam, and a sawmill. In 1864, the dam was sold to August Steiness, who dismantled the distillery and expanded the gristmill. Upon Steiness’s death in 1866, his widow sold the mill to William Lange, who then built a larger dam. In 1897, a post office was established under the name of Lange; however, it was changed to Doss in 1907. Doss continued to be a major German community that included Lutheran and Baptist churches, a general store, a fire station, a two-room schoolhouse, and the last unconsolidated school in the county.
