Driftwood is a census-designated place and an unincorporated community in Hays County. Although it was first known as Liberty Hill when it was first settled in 1850, most occupants arrived in the early 1880s, when the community was known as a supply center for nearby farms and ranches. That, and the establishment of nearby rail terminals made the settlement quickly prospered through that decade. By 1890, the community had its post office, school, gin, store, and churches. A century after its founding, Driftwood continued to be a quiet Hill Country junction served by its post office, and a general store. To date, the community remains to be the home of Stinson Distilling & Winery, Driftwood Estate Winery, Wildflower Barn Event Center, Stonehouse Villa Wedding Venue, Vista Brewing, Lazy 8 Ranch, and The Salt Lick, a prominent barbecue restaurant.
