Duncanville is a city in Dallas County. It was first settled in 1845, when Illinois resident Crawford Trees bought thousands of acres south of Camp Dallas. In 1880, a rail line arrived and built Duncan Switch, which was named after its foreman. Two years later, a post office was granted under the name of Duncanville. Although a catastrophic fire tore down most of the city’s commercial buildings in 1884, the town managed to recover soon after. By the late 1800s, Duncanville had dry goods stores, a domino parlor, a pharmacy, and a school. Gin and a bank were established in the early 1900s and the number of its residents tripled. In 1947, the city was incorporated. The population increased to more than 31,000 in 1988. Local commerce had then expanded to other areas in town, mostly to shopping centers. In 2000, Duncanville had 1,307 businesses and 36,081 residents.
