Dyess Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force Base located southwest of Abilene. It was established in 1942 as the Abilene Army Air Base. Dyess was named after Lieutenant Colonel William Dyess, a Texas native who survived the Bataan Death March. The base has more than 5,000 people, making it the single largest employer in the area. It has about 200 facilities and 988 units of family housing that covers 6,117 acres of land. The base’s influence on the Abilene area has been remarkable; it contributed around 200 million dollars and around 1,500 off-base jobs to its local economy in 1989. In 2001, Dyess contributed around 307 million in economic impact and had civilian employees close to 6,000.
