Early is a city in Brown County. Welcome W. Chandler first settled to the area in the early 1850s, where it was still considered to be a part of Brownwood. Chandler’s house became the county’s first post office in 1858. After the Civil War, debates over water and land rights resulted in the relocation of its residents, thereby creating two communities. One of which is Early, which was named after Atty. Walter U. Early, who donated land for several schools in 1928, the year when the Early ISD was also organized. The city was incorporated in 1951 and the Heartland Mall, the first mall in the Brownwood area, was opened in 1980. Two years later, a city hall was built and its post office was inaugurated three years after.
