East Bernard is a city in Wharton County. The settlement was originally on the east side of the San Bernard River; hence where the city was named after. Although the first residence was built around 1850, it wasn’t until 1859, when a railway was built, that the town started to develop. Consequently, a bridge was established and Bernard Station was moved from the east side to the west side of the river in 1869. The rest of the town developed around the rail line, and the first post office that opened in 1866 was officially named East Bernard in 1874. In the 1980s, agriculture became the city’s economic mainstay, along with a gas pipeline company, a major kite manufacturer, and various research corporations. East Bernard also became a sports-oriented city; it won the Texas state football championship in 1977 and 2012. In addition, East Bernard also became known as a volleyball powerhouse; the East Bernard Brahamarettes had the highest number of state championships with 13 wins.
