Egypt is undisputedly the oldest community in Texas. It is located in Wharton County but was initially in Colorado County. The original settlement in this area began in 1829. However, Egypt still had settlers by 1822. John C. Clark is among the earliest inhabitants, and this community lies on his league. What led to the establishment of this area is Eli Mercer's ferry and plantation. The boat operated at San Felipe-Texana crossing on Colorado River. Mercer’s establishment led to the original naming of this area as Mercer’s Crossing. However, this name changed to Egypt after supplying corn to nearby settlements during an acute drought. By 1896, the community operated a cotton gin and produced its first sugarcane.
