El Indio is a census-designated place (CDP) in Maverick County supposedly named after the nearby Indio Creek. William L. Cazneau established a ranch in the place in the 1850s, which later became El Indio. Indio Cattle Company sold the land to the citizens to encourage farming. By 1880, Indio post office was founded a few miles south of the of El Indio’s current location. However, the post office closed down in 1884 with Charles S. Murphy as the postmaster and another constructed later in 1939. El Indio operated a general store run by Walker and Humphries by 1884. During the Mexican Revolution, this area experienced elevated cases of military operations and theft.
