Fairfield City is situated in Freestone County in the US state of Texas. Its population in 2010 was 2,951, having declined from the 3,094 recorded in 2000. The city serves as Freestone County’s county seat. Fairfield was founded in 1851. The site where the city currently stands was originally named Mound Prairie, but was changed in 1850 when it was chosen as Freestone County’s county seat. David Hall Love donated 100 acres of land for the town’s original townsite. In 1851, a post office was opened in Fairfield. By 1852, the town had a jail, a grocery store, two hotels, and three dry goods stores.
