Farnsworth is located in west central Ochiltree County. It was established in 1919 when the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway arrived. The community was first called Olds, then changed to Nogal in 1905. The following year it was changed to Rogerstown but in 1919 the post office submitted a change of name to honor H. W. Farnsworth, the railroad director. Before this, ranchers had settled here as early as the 1880s. Population estimates have fluctuated between a low of twenty, first recorded in 1925, and a high of 200 in 1949. In 2000 the estimated population was 130.
