Located in northern Rockwall County, the name Fate was from the nickname of Lafayette Brown, an early settler. The town of Fate was settled shortly after the Civil War in the 1860s. Dr. Wylie T. Barnes platted a new community on his land about a half-mile northeast of Fate, calling the new community Barnes City. Barnes City was changed to Fate because most of the residents had moved over there. The area was known as an oasis for travelers as the wells never run dry even during droughts. Fate had the distinction of being the smallest town, in the smallest county, in the largest state in the Union.
