Flatonia is located in southwestern Fayette County. Being established in April 1974, residents of the original Flatonia settlement, one-mile southeast, and Oso, three miles northeast shifted to the current site. Flatonia was incorporated on November 10, 1875, and its first election was held the following December 6. The economy depended equally on cattle and cotton. The first settlers were primarily Anglo-American. Each year a weekend-long "Czhilispiel," a festival named by Czechs and Germans who like chili, attracts visitors from a wide area of Central Texas. The abandoned Flatonia Railroad Tower was one of Texas' longest-standing, manually-operated railroad switching towers.
