Originally known as Bolen Switch, local fruit growers petitioned for a change of name- Fruitvale. Based on the name, the city’s revenue was generated mostly by selling fruit trees, in addition to shipping lumber. The city is located in northeastern Van Zandt County. The first fruit nursery started operation during the 1870s. Fruitvale was incorporated in July 1965. The town is rural and has many commuters to the Dallas-Ft. Worth and Tyler areas. Fruitvale is home to the oldest festival in the community that is still being organized today. Hosted by the Fruitvale Volunteer Fire Department, the annual stew and carnival has occurred each October since the 1940s.
