Garfield was formed around the 1880s and was named for President James A. Garfield who was leading the country when the post office of the community was established in 1881. The post office stopped operating in 1902. Development to the Colorado River saw the community grow more and more. The city was incorporated in 1985 to avoid annexation with Austin. Garfield is a CDP and is located in Travis County in Texas. As of the 2010 census, the town’s population was 1,698. The total area of the town is 13.9 square miles according to the U.S Bureau. The public education system is provided by the Del Valle Independent School District.
