Gouldbusk was named for an Englishman and a rancher by the name of William Gould-Busk. In the 1880s, the man bought the Starkweather ranch, and in 1903, the ranch was divided into smaller farms and it was then when the community came to be. The town didn’t grow that well even tho it became a ginning center for cotton farmers in the area. The town had a population of around one hundred and fifty residents in the 1940s. The town had a decline after World War II and reported around seventy people in the 1980s. The town’s population was reported the same in the year 2000. The community has a post office even though it is unincorporated.
