Grandfalls is a town in Ward County. It was first settled in the late 1880s due to the steady supply of water flowing in the nearby Pecos River. Hence, it was named after the “grand falls” of the river. A school district was established in 1892. Two years later, a devastating flood reached the down and destroyed its dam and cotton gin. The farmers left but two families rebuilt the brush dam and established new canals to extend irrigation. A post office was inaugurated in 1897 and towards the end of that decade, the town was laid out and a rail line advertised the land for settlement. Although a severe drought hit the town in 1916, it experienced an oil boom in 1928. As of 2010, the town had 360 residents.
